AS9100 Risk Management

AS9100 Risk Management: Requirements & Methods

Risk management in AS9100 refers to the systematic process of identifying, assessing, and addressing risks that could affect product conformity, on-time delivery, or customer satisfaction in aerospace manufacturing and service operations. AS9100 Rev D introduced explicit risk-based thinking requirements that extend beyond the risk considerations in ISO 9001.

Organizations using AS9100 must identify risks to product and process quality, analyze their potential impact, and implement controls or mitigation measures. Risk assessment typically occurs during planning activities, design reviews, process changes, and supplier qualification. Common tools include Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), process flow diagrams, and risk matrices.

The standard requires documented risk management processes for critical areas, including design, production, and supply chain operations. Organizations must retain records of risk assessments and mitigation actions. AS9100 emphasizes both product safety risks and operational risks that could affect conformity to customer or regulatory requirements.
