AS9100 Key Characteristics

AS9100 Key Characteristics: Definition & Control

Key characteristics are product features, process parameters, or material properties that can significantly affect product safety, performance, fit, function, producibility, or service life. In AS9100 (Aerospace Quality Management Systems standard), organizations must identify and control these characteristics throughout design, production, and service delivery.

AS9100’s Key characteristics require specific controls, including verification activities, tighter process monitoring, and documented inspection methods. Organizations typically identify these during design reviews and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) processes. These characteristics appear on engineering drawings, work instructions, and inspection plans with designations that indicate their critical nature.

AS9100 requires organizations to document how characteristics are identified, controlled, and verified. Control methods may include statistical process control, in-process inspection, specialized tooling, or specific operator qualifications. The standard mandates that key characteristics be communicated to suppliers when they affect purchased products or services.
